Each naming ceremony is unique. Here we will welcome the Diaspora back home. They might include music, singing, poems, readings, parental promises to their child, the appointment of ‘grandparents’, and perhaps a symbolic action such as planting a tree, signing a certificate, or writing in a wish book.

Here we will explore where our ancestors took their last bath and get to experience it as well.

Here we will explore where our ancestors were kept and tourtured in captivity before their journey to the Americas.

Here we will explore another castle where our ancestors were enslaved.

Here we will explore the local markets and learn how to use the local currency Cedes. You will purchase your local arts and crafts such as masks and kente trinkets .

"Kente" is a colorful Ghanaian traditional fabric which is worn mostly on important occasions and celebrations. A trip to Bonwire in the Ashanti region, would teach one the story behind "Kente", one of Ghana’s most revered fabrics and also how it is made. Bonwire is a town in Ejisu-Juaben Municipal district in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. 

It is the home of the Akan "Kente" cloth. Located 18km on the Kumasi-Mampong Road, Bonwire is popular worldwide for "Kente" weaving. "Kente" was developed around 17th Century A.D by the people of Ashanti Kingdom and can be traced to the long tradition of weaving in Africa dating back to circa 3000 BC. 

The origin of Kente according to Joe, the tour guide is that, it is grounded in both legends and history. For the legend, two hunters named Ameyaw and Kuragu had their weaving lessons from a spider that was weaving its web. They tried to do same by weaving a beautiful fabric. 

Orphanage Volunteer Experience – Give Back with Purpose

As part of our cultural immersion in Ghana, students will have the meaningful opportunity to volunteer at a local orphanage. This hands-on service experience allows participants to build real connections through tutoring, arts and crafts, sports, storytelling, and everyday support activities.

More than just giving time, students will gain perspective, compassion, and leadership skills as they engage with children in need—many of whom are eager to learn, play, and be inspired. It’s a powerful reminder that giving back can shape not only the lives of others but also our own.

This volunteer component is a core part of our journey and leaves a lasting impact long after the trip ends.

Relax and enjoy the evening as you converse about the days events and/or go out and explore Accra nightlife on your own.

Here  we will complete an African american studies program. Each day will be different. Itinerary will be sent. These days will be intertwined with other events.
